Vembu Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is the new Vembu's backup solution included in the Vembu BDR Suite 4.2.0 to protect Office 365 and G Suite (still in beta) mailboxes.
The new solution allows you to backup Office 365 mailboxes ensuring the highest level of security for your data providing the following capabilities:
- Backup Office 365 emails, contacts, calendars and OneDrive for Business data
- Backup entire domain or specific user data
- Store backup data On-Premises or Vembu Cloud
- Granular restore of specific user mailbox, individual mails or at folder-level
- Restore lost, corrupted and permanently deleted Office 365 data to the same or different user accounts
- Export to multiple formats like .PST, .EML, .VCF, .ICF

The operating systems supported are the following:
- Windows Server 2008R2, 2012, 2012R2, 2016, 2019
- Windows 7SP1, 8.1, 10
Supported storage for backups
Office 365 backup data can be stored in the following platforms:
- On-Premises - Office 365 data can be stored in your local datacenter or in a public cloud such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Oracle cloud, etc., ensuring full control of your data.
- Vembu Cloud - still in beta, Office 365 data can be safely stored in Vembu Cloud with no setup or maintenance required. AWS is the platform used by Vembu to hold its servers ensuring GDPR compliance.
Available Editions and pricing
- Standard Edition - you can backup and restore your Office 365 emails, contacts, calendars, and Onedrive for Business with no limitations at $1.5/user/month.
- Free Edition - at zero cost, you can protect your Office 365 emails, contacts, calendars and Onedrive for Business up to 10 users.
Install Vembu Backup for Microsoft Office 365
Download the software from Vembu website and run the installer. Click Next to begin the installation.
Accept the EULA and click Next.
Select Custom setup type to see available options and click Next.
Specify the Password for the admin account and click Next.
Select features to install (just one available) then click Next.
Click Install to proceed with software installation.
Vembu Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is being installed in the system.
When the installation has been completed, click Finish to exit the wizard.
Configure Vembu Backup for Microsoft Office 365
Access the login page and enter the correct credentials. Click Login.
General setup
Specify the Time Zone to use and click Save.
Specify the Product ID and click Save.
Select the storage repository for backups and click Save.
After completing general setup, the dashboard is displayed.
Configure Office 365 application in Azure
To backup Office 365 data is necessary to configure the software with the correct tenant to protect. Select Backup > Office 365 from main menu.
Click Add Application button. The Office 365 application must be first configured in Azure in order to grant the correct permission to Vembu to protect the specific tenant.
Enter the Office 365 administrator to access Microsoft Azure.
Enter the password and click Sign in.
In Microsoft Azure dashboard, click Azure Active Directory under Azure Services.
Click App registration under Manage.
Click New Registration to configure the application required by Vembu.
Specify a Name for the application to create and select the Account type to be used. Click Register when done.
Take note of the Application (client) ID since it will be required later to finalize the application setup in Vembu. Click on Add a Redirect URI link.
Now click Add a platform.
Select Web as platform to use.
In the Redirect URIs enter the reply URL of your infrastructure (for example sts.nolabnoparty.com) then click Configure to save the setup.
Configure permissions
Click View API permissions to set required permissions to protect Office 365 mailboxes.
Click Add a permission to grant the permissions to the application.
Select Microsoft Graph as Microsoft API to use.
In the Microsoft Graph section, click Delegated Permissions.
You need to set the following permissions:
- Calendars.ReadWrite.Shared
- Contacts.ReadWrite.Shared
- Directory.ReadWrite.All
- Files.ReadWrite.All
- Group.ReadWrite.All
- Mail.ReadWrite.Shared
- Mail.Send
- Mail.Send.Shared
- offline_access
- People.Read.All
- Sites.ReadWrite.All
- User.ReadWrite.All
Click Add permissions to save the permission set.
Click Add a permission to configure additional permissions.
Select Microsoft Graph once again.
In the Microsoft Graph section, click Application Permissions.
Set the following permissions:
- Calendars.ReadWrite
- Contacts.ReadWrite
- Directory.ReadWrite.All
- Files.ReadWrite.All
- Group.ReadWrite.All
- Mail.ReadWrite
- Mail.Send
- People.Read.All
- Sites.ReadWrite.All
- User.ReadWrite.All
Click Add permissions to save the permission set.
When all required permissions have been set, click Grant admin consent for domain.com.
Click Yes to confirm.
All permissions have been set and granted.
Configure the client secret
Access the Certificates & secrets section and click New client secret.
Add a Description and the Expires then click Add.
Copy the Value that it will be required to complete the configuration in Vembu.
Configure the Office 365 tenant
Go back to Vembu Backup for Microsoft Office 365 tenant configuration and enter the Application Id and Application Secret[Password] of the application just created in Azure. Click Add Application.
Once the application has been configured, click Add Account to specify the credentials to use to access your Office 365 tenant.
Enter your Office 365 administrator and click Next.
Enter the Password and click Sign in.
Click Accept to grant the previously configured permissions.
Configure the backup job
To configure specific mailboxes, select Let me choose the users manually to backup.
Select users to backup and click Proceed.
Configure the Scheduling and the Retention then click Proceed.
Select Run Immediately to execute the backup immediately without waiting for the schedule. Click Run the backup to save the configuration and proceed with the backup.
Click OK to confirm.
The backup is performed.
Click on the arrow next to Backup in progress to display the Progress window.
Depending on the size of your mailboxes to protect, after some minutes the backup completes successfully.
Check the backup details
Select Reports > Office 365 from main menu to check the backup report.
Click Dashboard in the main menu to display the configured Office 365 tenant.
