Veeam Recovery Orchestrator v7: installation - pt. 1

Veeam Recovery Orchestrator v7 (VRO) is the latest release of the Veeam solution to automate and streamlines the disaster recovery with automated testing, comprehensive reporting and dashboards.

VRO is part of the Veeam Data Platform and is composed by three components:

• Veeam Recovery Orchestrator
• Veeam Backup & Replication
• Veeam ONE

Currently only the VMware vSphere platform is supported.

Veeam Recovery Orchestrator v7 installation

Download from Veeam website the Veeam Data Platform ISO file.

Run the installation wizard and click Install.

Select Veeam Recovery Orchestrator 7 option.

Click I Accept to accept the EULA.

Veeam Recovery Orchestrator requires these packages installed. Click Next.

Click Browse license file and select the VRO license file. Click Next to continue.

Specify the User name and Password for the VRO services account. Click Next.

If you are performing a fresh installation, select Install new instance of SQL Server and Windows authentication credentials of the service account options. Although Veeam Backup & Replication supports PostgreSQL database, VRO and Veeam ONE don't yet so you need to install Microsoft SQL. Microsoft SQL Express is good for POC and LAB only and it is not recommended for production. Click Next.

The installation procedure enables missing features.

Click Install to begin the installation.

The installation is composed by 13 steps.

The installation takes a few minutes to complete.

When the installation has been completed, click Finish to exit the wizard.

Click Yes to restart the system to complete the configuration.

Initial configuration

After rebooting the system, double click the VRO icon placed on the desktop and enter the credentials to access the console. Click Log in.

Click Next.

The first thing to do is to define who has the Administrator role. Click on the Assign Administrator role to users link.

Specify the Account type (it's recommended to use Groups instead of single user for better management) and click Add to add the desired Account.

Click Apply.

Optionally click Edit and enter the Server details. Click Next.

Click Add credentials to specify the credentials used to connect the infrastructure (vCenter Server, Veeam Server, etc.).

Click Add and enter User and Password to use. Click Add then Apply.

Click Deploy Orchestrator agent to orchestrate Veeam Backup & Replication Servers.

Click Add and select Veeam Backup & Replication as Server type and specify the DNS name or IP of the Veeam Server at Production Site to orchestrate and the Credentials. Click Add then Apply.

Click Connect to vCenter Server to add the vCenter to VRO.

Click Add and enter the DNS name or IP of the Production vCenter Server and specify the Credentials. Click Add. Do the same procedure to add the DR vCenter Server.

Click Next.

Click Finish to complete the initial configuration.

The installation procedure is now complete. Part 2 will cover the Tags used to configure the components used by Veeam Recovery Orchestrator.
